There has been a definite trend with releases this Autumn, and it is again geared around visually enhanced designs that are set to light up pitches this Winter. It all started during the Summer months with the rather popping Lotto Solista, designed to light up under the exposure of bright lights. We haven’t seen a great deal of players wearing the luminescent boots (other than in Spain) but what we have seen has been decently impressive.

Hit the Autumn/Winter releases, and both Nike and Adidas took very similar routes, with completely different tactics. Nike went for bright colors and clashing combo’s in their prominent?Hi-Vis Collection, whereas Adidas took to a traditional black series and added some reflective exposure for the Enlightened Pack. Both have been highly promoted over the past few weeks and we have been innovated with details about both. For example:

Here, we take a look at the nuts and bolts behind both releases and then we breakdown who the real market winners are.

Nike Hi-Vis Collection

In typical Nike fashion, the US brand found a way to piece together clashing vibrant colors in a very complimentary fashion. To combat gloomy weather and stand out on-pitch, Nike mixed together Volt, Electro Purple, Green Glow and Electric Green colors.

When creating this Hi-Vis Collection, Nike took into consideration the success of the summer 2010 World Cup collection. Then, a Metallic Purple and Total Orange color combination really stood out both on the field for players and for fans watching. This current combo of colors again comes from the same visual acuity research.

Adidas “The Enlightened” Pack

adidas decided that reflective exposure innovation was the direction they wanted to take with their Autumn collection. The concept is that the boot captures and bounces off the light of floodlights and cameras to stun defenders and opposing players.

The Predator LZ, Nitrocharge 1.0, F50 adiZero and adiPure 11Pro all got the Blackout treatment, before the luminescent strips were applied in the form of Adidas signature 3-stripes and some laces were inset. The primary goal of this series is based around miCoach, where players can add the Luminescent features to their own design.

Who Wins the Battle?

It is far easier to spot the Nike Hi Vis Collection on pitch. The boots are very visually prominent and Nike has got the color combo’s spot on, although they don’t make for the prettiest boots ever released. If you look at any top flight game this weekend, you will spot a ton of players wearing one of the designs and any boot fanatic out there can even differentiate the silo of boot from a distance.

The winner of this battle is the Nike Hi-Vis Collection.

In saying all that, you can’t argue with Adidas tactics. Although the releases are very dull and ordinary, they went with what many consider to be the color that boots should always be – Black! We have seen a resurgence in players desires for more traditional releases and Adidas did just that with a new popping feature. Plus, their primary goal is to advertise and promote the ability to add ‘reflective exposure’ features to miCoach boots. Adidas downfall; not making this collection more readily available to fans.
